Temple of Poseidon

Description: The Temple of Poseidon, dedicated to the god of the sea, is the most famous monument in Sounion. Built around 444 BC, it is a classic example of the Doric order. From the temple’s location, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.

Historical Significance: The temple was important to the Athenians as it protected sailors and fishermen. Inscriptions and other findings in the area reveal the ancient worship.

Special Information: The sunset at Sounion with the Temple of Poseidon in the foreground is one of the most beautiful in Greece.

The Temple of Athena 

Description: Near the Temple of Poseidon was the Temple of Athena Sounia, dedicated to the goddess Athena. Although few remains exist today, the temple played a significant role in the worship of the gods in the region.

Historical Significance: The temple is linked to the ancient Athenian naval power and the protection of the area.
